Heath attacks Major over wider EC

Article Abstract:

The House of Commons voted 336 to 92 to give a second reading to the European Communities (Amendment) Bill, including the Maastricht treaty in UK law. Sir Edward Heath supported the Bill but queried eastern Europe's strength of democracy and felt that it was unfair to suggest membership to countries with a standard of living 32.1% of the EC average. Without naming Mrs Thatcher, he criticised 'xenophobic and bigoted' remarks she made about Germany.

Major resists call for independent review

Article Abstract:

Labour leader John Smith asked the Prime Minister John Major to agree to an independent review of the colliery closures but Major explained that the 10 mines to be closed immediately had no economic future. He said that Board of Trade President Michael Heseltine would publish a statement of the evidence that government energy policy would render the mines unviable. The House of Commons would debate the matter before making final decisions.

Major 'makes no apology' for keeping British options open on single currency

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major has emphasised that the possible economic and constitional outcomes of monetary union remain unclear, so it is best at present to delay any decision on whether the UK should join a single European currency. He believes that it is the national interest to keep all options open, as all the facts are not currently available. He has refused to state whether or not he is in principle in favour of a single currency.
