Heseltine flies the flag in China

Article Abstract:

UK deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine is currently heading the largest ever British trade mission to China. A considerable number of UK companies are now investing in China, benefiting from the low wage levels there. However, there are still many political problems in China, with the government operating in a very repressive manner. Many Chinese are looking to growing foreign investment as a way to resolve the country's political problems.

While the best dither, the worst wait in the wings

Article Abstract:

Although Germans dislike the violence against foreigners, there is hostility between easterners and westerners. Solidarity produced economic problems. Central government in Bonn never quite reaches agreement. Scandals about political corruption abound.

Custody of police stations is key to balance of power

Article Abstract:

Authorities in Moscow are keen to give the impression that they have won the war against the rebel republic of Chechnya. However, there are still many places within Chechnya which are held by supporters of ousted president Dzhokhar Dudayev, who want to form an independent republic called Ichkeria. They claim to have no respect for the apparent authority of Russian troops stations in Chechnya.
