High blood pressure: is your doctor on the case?

Article Abstract:

Many doctors fail to care properly for patients with high blood pressure, and a lot of blood pressure measurement is carried out incorrectly, particularly in the case of junior hospital doctors. However, the condition can be extremely serious, putting a great strain on the heart and increasing the risk of suffering a stroke. Doctors should avoid prescribing drug treatment for high blood pressure after just one reading, and should give advice to patients about lifestyle changes which will reduce their blood pressure.

A devastating brush with baldness

Article Abstract:

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease which produces patchy baldness, loss of all scalp hair or loss of all body hair, which can be caused by severe shock. Steroid treatment can help some people. Research at the biomedical sciences department of Bradford University and Leeds General Infirmary discovered that the hair roots of alopecia patients are abnormal. A study of 300 patients found the drug diphencyprone helped the growth of hair in 1/3 of cases. There is a support group, Hairline International.

A brave face on baldness

Article Abstract:

Every patient who loses their hair as a result of chemotherapy is entitled to a synthetic wig from the National Health Service. However, some people simply cannot adapt to wearing a wig, even when they have been carefully fitted for the wig and people around them reassure them that they look attractive. It may be better to wear hats, avoiding showing a completely bald head if that causes distress to close family members, especially children.
