Homosexuality is neither a white man's disease nor a sin

Article Abstract:

Bishops attending the Lambeth Conference have tried to avoid discussing sexuality, preferring instead to focus on Third World debt. In fact, the bishops should really seek to come to terms with homosexuality. They should indicate what kinds of sexual behaviour should be condemned, and should then decide whether a blessing should be made available to same-sex couples and whether people who are openly gay or lesbian should be ordained to the priesthood. The issue of homosexuality will prove very testing for the extremely flexible nature of the Anglican Communion.

Accounting for the City rogues

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of cases recently in which financial traders have amassed large deficits. It is purely a matter of luck that such behaviour has not yet affected ordinary investors. There are now many companies seeking to attract investors in unit trusts, investment trusts or similar products, but very few would have the financial resources to cover a very large loss if one of their traders acted dishonestly. The payment of large bonuses to City staff encourages them to take risks, and this will eventually have very serious consequences.

The white heat of a successful party conference

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party appears to be in a strong position in the run-up to the next general election, especially with the growing weakness of the Conservative party. However, it must still carefully manage its 1996 annual conference if it is to retain its current advantage. The experiences of the Labour party in 1963, when it had been out of power for 12 years, show that the Conservative party is always hard to beat, even when it appears to be very weak.
