Hope in the silence of a Unionist

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist leader James Molyneaux did not attend the latest round of peace talks with the UK government, and this should cause concern for prime minister John Major, who has established a strong personal relationship with Molyneaux. His absence may mean that he is being pushed out by other Unionists, or that he feels very let down by the tone of the leaked framework document. However, his silence could be viewed more positively as a sign that he simply wants to keep his room for manoeuvre as wide as possible.

Now is the time to praise the work of democratic politicians

Article Abstract:

The peace agreement in Northern Ireland is one of the rare political events that represent the vital spirit of democracy and show that there is really a purpose for politics. Such events show that representative politics can make the world a better place. The Northern Irish agreement, reached at the last minute following extremely hard bargaining, was the culmination of many small acts of moral courage undertaken by a very wide range of people, some of whom will never be known.

Shreds of hope remain among the shards of glass

Article Abstract:

Some observers fear that the recent bomb attacks by the IRA, which this organisation seems to see as a legitimate way of prompting peace talks, will spark off a loyalist backlash and that Northern Ireland will descend into violence once again. However, it is important not to dismiss the Northern Irish situation as hopeless, as this places a great burden on ordinary residents there. There are still signs of hope, especially if Gerry Adams distances himself from the IRA.
