How a sweaty man can mix up women's rhythm: women who live or work together often menstruate together, but why?

Article Abstract:

Scientists discovered in 1971 that women living or working close together have their periods at the same time. Recent research shows part of the reason is that women who sweat together bleed together. Professor Martha McClintock studied 135 women in an American college dormitory. After a year friends' and room-mates' periods had synchronised. Cynthia Graham, research psychologist at Medical Research Council's Reproductive Biology Unit, Edinburgh, said emotional attachment is a factor. A chemical fragrance may signal synchrony. Anthropologists have described the importance of synchronised bleeding in different ethnic groups.

Now you need more than the 'Right Stuff.' (requirements of astronauts)

Article Abstract:

Astronauts in 1993 have to be mature and brainy, unlike the early astronauts who had to be young, physically fit and mentally alert but not particularly intelligent. Astronaut Dr Story Musgrave, 58, is a surgeon with several degrees. Kathryn Thornton, 40, is a doctor of the philosophy of physics. They will make decisions about complex scientific instruments on the Hubble repair mission. The Dec 1993 launch involves space walks to replace faulty solar arrays and rectify the faults in its main mirror.
