How long can Germany's commercial verve and political paralysis coexist?

Article Abstract:

Significant recovery is taking place in German manufacturing. In contrast, the country's political climate remains unsettled. Growing opposition to the government is affecting economic policy, and Finance Minister Hans Eichel is facing considerable challenges as he seeks to get a new budget through parliament. Delay in implementing fiscal reforms will mean that these reforms will have to become increasingly radical. Some observers believe that commercial strength and political paralysis can continue to co-exist for some time to come.

Cover your posterior isn't the long-term answer

Article Abstract:

It appears that politicians generally give very little consideration to the impact of their actions on future generations. This is seen, for example, in their reluctance to agree to strict targets for reducing emissions of carbon dioxide. It is also seen in their failure to take action to deal with the fact that current pension contributions will not be sufficient to fund pension costs in the future. It is now time for politicians to test all their ideas for their likely impact on future generations.
