How to disentangle competition policy in the Net's domains

Article Abstract:

The new electronic economy that is emerging as Internet use expands presents significant challenges in relation to competition policy. These challenges include the existence of network effects and, in broader terms, of increasing returns to scale. These features do not necessarily have to alter the basics of competition policy, but problems arise because it becomes increasingly difficult to establish whether fair competition exists. Furthermore, efforts to increase competition by establishing industry-wide technical standards could be seen as collusion designed to exclude new entrants.

Four years of speculation? We'll all be nervous wrecks

Article Abstract:

It is possible that sterling will be exposed to high levels of speculation while the UK continues to hesitate about participating in European economic and monetary union. Speculation will be fuelled by a policy likely to be targeted at an exchange rate that will need interest rates to be set at a level unsuitable for domestic reasons and by genuine political uncertainty about whether the government wishes to join the single currency. Some observers believe that it would be better for the UK to simply decide to join the single currency.

How the euro could become the saviour of UK manufacturing

Article Abstract:

The problems facing the UK manufacturing industry are discussed. Particular attention is given to the strength of sterling, and it is suggested that the decline in the UK's trade performance since 1998 shows that sterling has been significantly overvalued on the foreign exchanges.
