How to get a slice of the action

Article Abstract:

The recent wave of takeover deals among UK companies, particularly banks, building societies and the privatised electricity companies, has benefited deposit-holders and shareholders. Flotations are also bringing in unexpected cash benefits, and this area look set to offer considerable potential in the future. It is worth considering opening a deposit account with a small mutual company which may become a takeover target in the future, and quoted life assurance companies could also be attractive.

Insurers are up for grabs

Article Abstract:

It has been recognised for some time that many of the UK's insurers are too cost-inefficient to survive. It is therefore not surprising that signs of consolidation are now emerging in the mutual insurance industry. Many mutual insurers are simply too small to have a long-term future, while the large operators are likely to abandon mutual status, following the example of building societies. Policyholders are likely to see little direct benefit from a takeover or share issue.

Brokers and benchmarks may not be a great combination

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views about moves towards introducing benchmarks for private client investment funds. Some observers believe that benchmarks will play an important role in improving the performance of the private client stockbroking sector and that they will serve to give clients an idea of whether they are receiving good advice from their stockbroker or investment manager. However, others feel that benchmarking will only really have an impact on advertising.
