How to publish and be doomed

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the UK government is deliberately manipulating educational research to justify controversial and wide-reaching changes in educational policy. Research is set to become increasingly subject to government control, and researchers seeking funding will find that their ability to research the subjects in which they are particularly interested will be limited. It is clear that there are dangers associated with extending to educational research the narrow focus implicit in the government's education policy.

Dangerous liaisons: why the French still do it in style

Article Abstract:

Some sociologists believe that French men no longer have mistresses, but that they have adopted the Anglo-Saxon practice of affairs followed by divorce and remarriage. This claim is not backed up by a number of high-profile cases. Christine Deviers-Joncour, a paid consultant of national oil company Elf, was kept in great luxury by Elf and Minister of Foreign Affairs Roland Dumas, her lover. Similarly, former European commissioner for education and science Edith Cresson was one of President Francois Mitterrand's many mistresses.

Too much research, or not enough?

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that a large proportion of the around 63 million pounds sterling spent each year on educational research in the UK is wasted. They feel that much educational research is of poor quality and does not contribute to improving educational standards. In contrast, others believe that educational reform cannot be undertaken without a sound basis of educational research. They accept that educational research is not always excellent, but feel that it still has an important role to play.
