How to share the cost of care? New solutions for an old-age problem

Article Abstract:

The cost of professional nursing care, especially in a residential setting, can quickly absorb the life savings and home of an elderly person. This means that the children are left with no money at all when that person dies. It is believed that the forthcoming Budget will contain measures to help to ease this situation. These could include increasing the 8,000 threshold below which a local authority will pay for the full cost of care, thus allowing the elderly person to retain a larger sum of money to pass on to other members of the family.

A small, faltering step for the elderly

Article Abstract:

There has been opposition from a number of different sources to plans by the UK government to establish links with insurance companies to promote insurance policies to fund long-term care and assist the elderly in remaining in their own homes. Most observers feel that the plans are not broad enough and that in their present form they will only really be suitable for people with assets of less than 75,000 pounds sterling. There is a feeling that more emphasis should be given to meeting demand for care.

Strong sterling takes further toll of UK companies

Article Abstract:

A number of United Kingdom companies have had their financial performance hit by the high value of pound sterling. They include Smith and Nephew, a healthcare concern, Glynwed, an engineering concern, and BOC, a gas producer. Profits from abroad have been hit by the high pound with both transaction costs and translation costs having an impact. Companies can, however, benefit from the pound's rise by borrowing abroad so reducing the impact of translation costs.
