'I begged them to put her into care.' (Mercy Zani-Merriman, whose 15-year-old daughter Nobantu was murdered)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

Mercy Zani-Merriman has attracted a lot of criticism since her 15-year-old daughter Nobantu was found murdered in Sep 1995. She has been accused of neglecting her daughter and of overlooking the fact that she had become a child prostitute. She admits that she had some failings as a mother, but feels that she was given no support in looking after her daughter. Social services, the school and the educational welfare office were all aware that Nobantu was failing to attend school and making undesirable acquaintances, but no action was taken.

Scouting for a new image

Article Abstract:

Many teenagers are now unwilling to join the Scouts or the Guides, as they see the organisations as unfashionable. Membership has been falling steadily over recent years, especially as other attractions become available. There is also a problem with finding adult leaders for these organisations. The organisations are finding it hard to define what they really stand for, and now recognise the urgent need to reassess their future.

The office party: file under D for Disaster

Article Abstract:

Many companies hold a party for their employees at Christmas. These are often occasions where people lose their inhibitions, and behave or talk in a way which later causes them to remember the event with great embarrassment. Women attending an office party often feel under pressure to be friendly to men making inappropriate advances, while men feel obliged to drink heavily.
