I think I'll go and eat worms

Article Abstract:

Poet John Hegley feels distanced from a lot of contemporary poetry, which he often fails to understand. He likes poetry to be puzzling, but also wants his work to be understood. He does not really worry that he is not included in mainstream poetry, and believes that his work will endure. He acknowledges that he makes himself vulnerable, but does not feel that there is anything wrong with being vulnerable. He has begun writing songs again, and has found that they are closer to poems than any of the verse work he has produced.

There once was a fellow named John...

Article Abstract:

Poetry can be extremely powerful, according to poet John Hegley. It has a certain significance on the surface, but can also show a much deeper, stronger power that can have a significant impact on the reader's emotions. Poetry has great mystery, intensity and vibrancy, and is a natural part of ordinary life, even though many people have become detached from it. He ensures that his poems have a clear message, and this has secured him great success on the comedy circuit.
