The Economist Intelligence Unit published a report by Philip Sadler and Keith Milmer which attempts to change attitudes to recruiting, motivating and rewarding employees. Highly trained speicialists with potential should be identified and individuals' career paths should be predicted. People with the knack of getting business and those who can move from one area of business to another are valuable. The report recommends giving talented people a sense of mission. A flexible organisational structure can channel creative talent.

The collapse of Barings bank will not prevent a similar collapse taking place in the future, as many banks believe that they have procedures in place which would prevent them falling victim to such a disaster, according to David Brilliant, head of internal audit at Chemical Bank. However, he believes that it is still necessary to improve internal audit procedures, ensuring that the risks facing the business are fully understood. It is particularly important to know how the bank makes its money.

Devaluing the shareholder

It is becoming clear that many companies do not really have much understanding of what they need to do to create shareholder value, even though they often strongly emphasize this philosophy. The most challenging issue is deciding the best approach to creating shareholder value. In the period 1994 to 1998, European companies tended to add value through restructuring, while US companies generally achieved it through growth, according to a survey by Boston Consulting Group.
