I'll take a Joyce and a Tolstoy or two

Article Abstract:

During the recession in 1992 bookshops are selling more classics, and displaying them on 1/5 of the shelves. Publishers consider books over 50 years old, out of copyright, school set texts and television serials to be classics. Everyman was successfully relaunched in Oct 1992, Wordsworth began publishing classics for one pound sterling and Dover Thrift Editions offered Plato, Joyce and Dostoevsky for 95 pence. Readers appreciate the depth and communality of classics.

A very English hero

Article Abstract:

Cricketer Michael Atherton has been hailed as a national hero since his lengthy innings which saved a recent match in Johannesburg, South Africa. His feat appealed particularly to the British audience because it was an escape from an apparently hopeless situation and because he was so determined not to give in. These are qualities which are very highly valued in British society.

This man is a poet, a namby-pamby soul who witters on about tear-stained pillows and autumn leaves. But why not listen to his tale of a city obliterated in an instant 50 years ago

Article Abstract:

Poet Tony Harrison's style is a unique combination of the erudite and the everyday. He is very keen on puns, and his poems often deal with contemporary events. He has gained a very strong reputation, yet remains extremely readable. This is mainly because he has never strayed far from his down-to-earth northern English roots.
