'I'm not a nerd anymore.' (Craig Newmark, creator of Craig's List Web site)(Network +)

Article Abstract:

Web sites can be a valuable way of making contact with others, according to freelance computer consultant Craig Newmark, founder of the Craig's List Web site. He initially created the site to inform a small group of friends and acquaintances about events taking place in San Francisco, CA, but the site has expanded rapidly. It now brings together thousands of people each day, and covers job advertisements and apartments to rent, as well as social events. It led to the creation of List Foundation, which has so far held two parties for regular List users.

In search of success

Article Abstract:

Latest search engine technologies are designed to eliminate some of the frustration often associated with trying to find specific information on the Web. Ask Jeeves and the Electric Monk both use natural language searching, while the Google and Clever search technologies are based on analyzing the link structure of the Web. IBM's Clever also analyzes hyperlinks and their surrounding text, but undertakes its analysis on the results obtained from submitting the query to a search engine.

The young men and the sea

Article Abstract:

Keen surfers are being attracted to a little-known location some 30 miles south along the coast from San Francisco, CA, where swells of between 20ft and 40ft are anticipated. Some 20 surfers, all of whom have surfed in this location before, are to take part in the first Quicksilver Men Who Surf Mountains event. It is widely recognized that it takes great courage to surf here, as there is a very unusual combination of wave conditions, as well as sharks.
