Impasse may keep hostage files open

Article Abstract:

There is deadlock in negotiations for the release of hostages held in the Middle East. The United Nations special envoy to Lebanon, Giandomenico Picco, has been unable to get any more hostages freed. He has received death threats and has been banned from re-entering Lebanon. The Lebanese kidnappers claim that the other negotiating parties, Israel and Germany, have broken their side of the bargain. They have said that more Western hostages will be taken if Israel continues to seize civilians and if Germany does not free the Hamadi brothers, imprisoned on terrorism charges.

Saddam 'was seeking confrontation.' (feature on US and allies attack against Iraq)

Article Abstract:

Military clashes in Iraq only 72 hours before President Bush was due to hand over to Bill Clinton on Jan 20, 1993 dominated the celebrations. There was an Iraqi MiG-23 aircraft in the no-fly zone, intrusion into northern Kuwait and an Iraqi anti-aircraft missile battery locked radar on allied planes. President Saddam promised to challenge his aggressors in a televised speech. He seems intent on causing a confrontation to coincide with the anniversary of the end of the 1991 air war.

Hostage who disappeared without trace

Article Abstract:

The body of Michael Seurat, who died in 1986 while being held hostage in Lebanon, has never been recovered. His widow, Marie, has put strong pressure on the French, Syrian, Lebanese, Israeli, US and UK governments to address this matter ever since his death, but it is only now that French diplomats in Beirut, Lebanon, are attempting to discover exactly what happened to Seurat. His widow believes that it is only her persistence that has ensured that action is finally being taken.
