In plain black and white

Article Abstract:

The UK National Union of Journalists estimates that only around 1.8% of its 28,000 members are from ethnic minorities. Recent research indicates that there are only 24 non-white staff journalists working on national newspapers. This is a very small proportion, given that blacks and Asians account for 6% of the national population. Editors are not overtly racist, but fail to take this problem seriously. They should now begin to, as the media is the clear reflection of society as a whole.

New Grub Street mourns its finest

Article Abstract:

Michael VerMeulen, the editor of 'GQ' magazine who died recently following a drug overdose, has been praised in obituraries in many broadsheet newspapers. This is strange, given that his magazine had a very small circulation and that he was not a well known public figure. He certainly played a key role in establishing the men's magazine sector, and led a lifestyle reminiscent of the peak of Fleet Street.
