In the NHS, the law of perverse incentives rules

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the management of waitings lists for treatment within the UK National Health Service are discussed. It is argued that setting targets for reducing waiting time can create perverse incentives, with non-urgent cases being treated ahead of urgent ones.

NHS chief: Public has a right to expect better

Hospital managers who falsify waiting list figures will face disciplinary action, according to United Kingdom National Health Service Chief Executive Nigel Crisp. The National Audit Office has found nine hospitals at which waiting list figures were misrepresented.

Issues concerning the misrepresentation of hospital waiting list statistics in the UK are discussed. It is argued that it is now time for radical thinking about National Health Service management and that there must be close collaboration between all involved.
