Inequality can seriously damage your health

Article Abstract:

Evidence from recent statistics indicates that changes in income distribution are reflected in health and mortality. In the UK, for example, the death rate was very similar for all social classes during the second world war, when there was a shared sense of purpose and incomes became more equal. Since that time, the difference in the death rate between the upper and lower classes has widened in line with the growing income disparity between these classes. In contrast, Sweden has a high degree of income equality and low mortality.

Memo to Mr Blair: we need to talk about raising taxes

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party has made a firm commitment to not raising the basic or the higher rate of income tax in the lifetime of the current parliament. This means that discussion of any aspect of taxation within the party has been significantly restricted. Indeed, the Labour party has become politically vulnerable because it has not debated taxation policy. It is now time to consider issues including how fair the tax system is and the uses to which taxes are put.
