Ireland is slowly moving from loathing to trust

Article Abstract:

Northern Ireland continues to face an uncertain future. A power-sharing executive will have to be established eventually, but there could be negative developments before then. The IRA ceasefire is not in imminent danger of collapse, but there is a risk that the extremists who operate on the fringes of Northern Irish politics will gain more support. This could lead to more innocent people losing their lives, even if the peace process as a whole is not destroyed. The fact that Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams have been communicating directly is a very positive sign.

Does this modern nation still need a Poet Laureate?

Article Abstract:

Speculation about who will be the UK's next Poet Laureate has fuelled debate about whether there is a need for a Poet Laureate at all. Some observers question whether poetry is sufficiently relevant to the everyday lives of ordinary people to justify continuing to have a Poet Laureate. They feel that the UK's culture has fragmented, making it wrong to honour poetry. The next Poet Laureate will certainly have to address sensitive issues of nationality and identity.
