UK: FREESERVE HOLDING ACQUIRED BY NEWSQUEST

Article Abstract:

The regional newspaper publisher Newsquest, a subsidiary of US news and information group Garnett, is to take a 9.9% holding in Freeserve Auctions, the auctions arm of the Internet service provider (ISP). Along with payment of GB[pound] 2mn in cash, Freeserve will receive GB[pound] 10mn in advertising support from Newsquest until 2003. Freeserve hopes to benefit from the potential customer base offered by Newsquest's UK regional readership, with auction listings being included in the newspapers' classified advertising sections. Meanwhile, the Competition Commission is considering Newsquest's plan to acquire Southampton-based regional publisher, News Communications & Media.

UK: FAILURE OF DOTCOMS

Article Abstract:

Commercial websites are shutting down at the rate of approximately one per day as venture capitalists refuse funding. Three-quarters of these are in the business-to-consumer field (selling goods or services to Internet users). Ready2Shop, the women's fashion site, is the latest casualty due to lack of funding, plus the fact it refused adverts and only gave advice rather than selling a product.
