Is this the last gasp of European terrorism?

Article Abstract:

The ceasefire announced by Basque separatist organization Eta comes only months after a similar move by the IRA and Sinn Fein, with which Eta has close links. In both cases, it has gradually become clear that terrorism is ineffective. There now seem to be good prospects for terrorism being marginalized in both Northern Ireland and Spain, as long as political progress towards a settlement can be maintained. However, racist, mainly right wing violence will remain a problem in a number of European countries, including Germany and Italy.

UN has a problem: members may soon start to disappear

Article Abstract:

Rising sea levels are beginning to submerge the lowest-lying areas of the Caribbean and the southern and western Pacific. This could become an increasingly serious problem as global warming worsens. Concern about land being submerged has prompted a special session of the United Nations General Assembly. Current estimates indicate that sea levels internationally could rise by up to 1 ft over the period to 2100. This would be sufficient to submerge 80% of the 1,087 islands forming the Maldives.

Shadows lengthen for Felipe

Article Abstract:

Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez was elected in 1983 and his socialist government has been in power for 10 years. He managed the democratic transition. Spain has been modernised since joining the EC and Nato but traditional life remains. Basque terrorism has been restrained with the help of the French police. Expo 1992, the Olympic Games in Barcelona and Madrid as European City of Culture were well organised events in a country not previously known for good organisation.
