'It is no use being bitter about what's happened.' (problems facing the relatives of people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease; two case studies)

Article Abstract:

The relatives of a person suffering from Alzheimer's Disease can find their lives completely changed. The victim behaves irrationally, and can often refuse to eat and suffer many physical problems. The deterioration can be quite fast, and a stage is reached where the sufferer does not recognise relatives and friends any more. This can be particularly distressing for carers. Relatives can also feel very guilty if the sufferer has to enter institutional care.

'I wondered what I had done wrong to make him hurt me so much.' (experiences of child abuse)

Article Abstract:

Many victims of child abuse are led to believe that their experiences are common to many families, and therefore do not feel that any action will be taken if they report the abuse to anyone outside the family. In some cases, both parents are involved in the abuse, and this makes it impossible for the child to discuss his or her feelings with anyone. Often, an older child will take any opportunity to leave home.

Stopping Sam from starving

Article Abstract:

It is thought that around 185,000 children in the UK have serious eating problems, and in some cases they even end up having to be drip-fed in hospital. Parents can feel extremely frustrated and guilty, and fear that their child may not survive. The Children's Society is now running an experimental project, looking with parents at ways of breaking the cycle of self-imposed starvation.
