It pays to keep students on course

Article Abstract:

The Audit Commission found in its report 'Unfinished Business' that over 1/3 of 16- to 19-year-olds give up their studies or fail their examinations. Schools, sixth-form and further education colleges are paid to recruit pupils rather than to keep them. The Further Education Funding Council may offer financial incentives to retain students until courses are completed. A system of units for enrolment, attendance and successful end could avoid waste of 330 million pounds sterling of resources.

The narrowing gateway to knowledge

Article Abstract:

The Higher Education Funding Council for England will decide how to divide 2.5 billion pounds sterling between the universities for the academic year 1993/4. It will fund research in some departments and affect student numbers. The government wishes to maintain the 28% of 18-year-olds at university until 1996 when the number of school leavers increases. Arts and social science fees have been reduced to encourage universities to restrict their intakes.

LSE could take legal action over grant allocation

Article Abstract:

The London School of Economics, England director John Ashworth may seek a judicial review of its cutback in research funding. Financial allocation from the Higher Education Funding Council for England is based on staff numbers, not students. Establishments may become teaching only or limit the members of staff following research. Polytechnics received a fivefold increase because of the high quality of their research.
