It will erode sovereignty, but it's inevitable

Article Abstract:

The issue of European Monetary Union (EMU) is causing great controversy in the UK at the moment, and it is becoming impossible to hold a logical view on the subject. It is unlikely that any national European currencies will be abolished in the foreseeable future, but EMU will take place in the longer term, as it has already become an unstoppable process. The UK government should ensure that it joins, but should press for western Europe to regain control of its public finances and labour markets first.

Good vibrations in Mexico City

Article Abstract:

There are good prospects for economic recovery in Mexico. Economic management there is relatively sound, and Mexico City itself appears to be flourishing. President Ernesto Zedillo remains committed to opening up the economy and the political systsem, and his wide-reaching austerity programme is not likely to be met with political violence. It is now likely that the peso will find its own natural level, making Mexico much more attractive to foreign investors.

Pocket guide to beating the Trap

Article Abstract:

Sir James Goldsmith is able to argue extremely persuasively, but his views on Europe are very reactionary. Many people are attracted to his criticism of western culture and economic imperialism, but there are clear economic arguments against his views. His writings are serving a useful purpose in highlighting and destroying complacency, but readers should not allow their sense of reason to be swept away by his views.
