It's a miserable life when the volume's turned down

Article Abstract:

Glue ear occurs in children when fluid accumulates in the middle ear and causes pain and deafness. Serious cases need surgery involving the insertion of a grommet into the middle ear. This operation is the most common among British children. The University of Birmingham is conducting research on the immune system, funded by the Hearing Research Trust. Children's immune systems are immature and they are more inclined to catch infections. Inflammation may be caused by the response of white cells to the bacteria.

With strings, but no hang ups

Article Abstract:

Virtuoso violinist Beverley Davidson was a child prodigy who attended the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England. She performed at the Royal Festival Hall when she was 18 and joined the avant-garde music group Fires of London. However, she suffered so badly from stage fright that she gave it up. She also compulsively overate. Jonny James persuaded her to play again by advising her to express herself differently. She formed the informal female string orchestra Hot Strings which plays a wide range of music.

Chuff your way into a time capsule

Article Abstract:

The surviving narrow-gauge steam railways in Wales include the Llanberis Lake Railway in the north and the Brecon Mountain Railway in the south. These railways attract more than 500,000 passengers a year. They give views of some of the most attractive scenery in the UK, taking people to places otherwise only accessible by a long walk. The railways are run by committed volunteers, who find the work very relaxing.
