Jail for 'corrupt' Tehran mayor

Article Abstract:

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has used the case against Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the mayor of Tehran, Iran, who has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, as a way of protecting himself against the allies of reforming President Mohamed Khatami, a friend of Karbaschi. There has been extensive media coverage of the case and of Karbaschi's appeal against his sentence. However, Khamenei is making a strong counter-attack.
