Just an illness with big ideas

Article Abstract:

The numbers of cases of Aids in the UK in 1993 are far less than the 100 million cases US Surgeon-General Dr Charles Everett Koop predicted by the year 2000. The disease becomes relegated to a possible hazard. The discovery of Aids was a shock as cures for many diseases had been found. People felt it was a warning that they had gone too far. Jeremy Paxman forecast the sexual counter-revolution. Aids made people realise that nature is more powerful than man.

Astrologers count their lucky stars

Article Abstract:

Astronomical research has shown recently that the star signs, with which there is a continued fascination among the general public, are in fact astronomically incorrect. This research has attracted considerable interest, even though scientists have for generations pointed out that there is no basis for the astrological theory. Scientists are very suspicious of astrology, viewing its popularity as a sign that they are losing their power and prestige.

Living dangerously in our dreams

Article Abstract:

There have been a growing number of cases recently in which people have tried to make a claim for compensation for incidents which are either of their own making or are simply part of everyday life. People want to take part in exciting or dangerous activities, but still expect the courts to indemnify them against anything that may happen. They are no longer prepared to accept that risk is inextricably linked with living.
