Soheir el-Qalamawy

Article Abstract:

Arabic scholar and writer Soheir el-Qalamawy was the first woman ever to hold a PhD in Arabic Literature. She exerted considerable influence over modern Arabic writers and critics, and helped to determine cultural developments in Egypt. She made a significant contribution to the women's movement, but was regarded by some observers as betraying feminism because she held official political posts from 1963. She was keen to create a new generation of women who were cultured and intelligent but also clearly feminine.

Row and shooting sparked Iraqi defections

Article Abstract:

Major General Hussein Kamel Hassan al-Majid and Saddam Kamel Hassan al-Majid, both sons-in-law of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, defected to Jordan following an argument at a family dinner which led to a shooting incident, according to a recent report. There was a disagreement about who was responsible for the policies which led to the US refusal to negotiate with Iraq about trade sanctions, and Watban Ibrahim, the president's half-brother, was later injured by a bullet.
