Article Abstract:

It is widely assumed that continental Europe will find it increasingly difficult to fund its pensioner population because its tax base will shrink with the ageing of the population. This view fails to take into account the impact of reducing unemployment on the availability of funding for pensioners. In fact, relatively small changes in the employed portion of the population of working age can have a significant impact on dependency ratios. Against this background, economies should give considerable attention to employing a larger proportion of their population.
