Labour's peerless performer

Article Abstract:

Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the UK Foreign Office, has gained widespread admiration for her intelligence and integrity. She has been a member of the Labour party for many years, and has worked extremely hard to establish her reputation. She gained favour with broadcasters as a liberal, moderate-thinking critic of the previous Conservative administration, and has shown energetic commitment to her Foreign Office work. She has recently been accused by Shadow Foreign Secretary Michael Howard of having misled the House of Lords.

While Robin Cook fails to live up to his advance billing, look out for John Prescott

Article Abstract:

Many observers believed that UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott would prove to be not suitable for such a high-profile position. They regarded him as being unable to pioneer policy and as being unstable. However, he has in fact performed much better than expected. He has remained very true to his principle of disagreeing with Labour party leader Tony Blair in private if necessary but supporting him in public. He has shown that he is able to put the interests of the government as a whole above his personal interests.

Smith Square gears up for battle

Article Abstract:

Conservative Party leaders are determined to establish an effective election machine, despite having lost directors of communication twice in a short period. The party has in the past been accused of using an unprofessional approach to campaigning, so party officials want to ensure that this will not be the case in the run-up to the next general election. A number of younger people with management experience have now been appointed to key Central Office positions.
