Landmine fear as traffic jam queues to get home

Article Abstract:

Thousands of ethnic Albanians are streaming back into Kosovo, Yugoslavia, from refugee camps in neighbouring countries, despite United Nations fears about land mines. The large volume of returning refugees is causing huge traffic jams in Kosovo. The province's water and food supplies will be placed under great pressure, with much of the livestock having died and many wells being poisoned or polluted. The World Food Programme has established a food distribution centre in Prizren, while the UNHCR is creating emergency water centres.

Thousands more herded into wagons

Article Abstract:

Serb police are deporting ethnic Albanians from Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, Yugoslavia, on extremely crowded trains. Refugees who have reached Macedonia report that there were scenes of great brutality in Pristina. Many men have been captured and killed by the Serbs, while most of the rest have fled into the hills. It is now feared that there will soon be no Albanians left in Kosovo for Nato to help. However, Nato believes that around 50,000 Kosovars are trapped near Malisevo.

Macedonia 'walking tightrope' to avert Balkan war

Article Abstract:

The former Yugoslav republic, Macedonia, fears invasion from its neighbours, Serbia, Albania, Greece or Bulgaria. Albanians rioted in Nov 1992 and peace meetings are common in Skopje, as they were in Bosnia before the war. Macedonian leaders said that Serbia was responsible for the riots to destablise the republic. The issue is equal status between Albanians, who comprise 1/3 of the population, and Macedonians. The EC will not recognise the republic.
