Lands united by thriving legacy of imperialists

Article Abstract:

The Spanish language became firmly established in Latin America because Spanish imperialists were prepared to acknowledge links with the countries they conquered, unlike their counterparts from France and the UK. Spanish is now the main language in 20 countries, and is likely to be spoken by around 400 million people by the end of the 20th century. Many English words were assimilated into Spanish throughout most of the 20th century, but this process is now beginning to work in reverse.

Portugal's children reap bitter harvest

Article Abstract:

It is believed that child labour is widespread in Portugal, one of the poorest parts of Europe. There are no reliable statistics, especially as the practice becomes more secretive as more cases are discovered. Many families are now undertaking piece-work at home as factories close down. Others send their children out to work as they are no longer able to afford to send them to school.

A terrible thirst in Torremolinos

Article Abstract:

The southern half of Spain is extremely badly affected by drought, with large areas turning into desert. Andalusia is particularly badly affected, and costly measures have had to be undertaken to obtain water supplies. Many observers fear that there could be a catastrophe if the autumn rains fail again in 1995.
