Law students, free at last

Article Abstract:

Law schools in the UK are beginning to recognize that pro bono, or free, work by students for the community under controlled circumstances could bring significant benefits. The College of Law has tested pro bon work for students through legal advice clinics operating from its branch in London, England. Students work in pairs, giving advice rather than taking on full cases. Their advice is checked by a barrister before it is given to the client. This approach introduces law students to problem-solving concepts and reinforces their formal learning.

A higher degree of postgraduate debt

Article Abstract:

Postgraduate representatives in the UK are concerned that financial considerations will increasingly deter students from undertaking postgraduate study. This is likely to be particularly the case with doctoral courses, which take three or four years to complete. The introduction of undergraduate tuition fees in autumn 1998 will probably make students even less willing to remain at university after completing their undergraduate course. Financial worries are already prompting some postgraduate students to abandon their courses.
