Laying the ghost of Peter

Article Abstract:

Benjamin Britten wrote the tenor title role of Peter Grimes specifically for the voice of Peter Pears, and was fully aware of the difficulties other tenors would have singing the part. When the opera opened very soon after the end of World War II, the work was acclaimed and Britten was established as the greatest British opera writer since Purcell. Four tenors who have sung it since, Ben Heppner, Jon Vickers, Robert Tear and Philip Langridge have all had their successes while admitting the work was challenging because it was so specific in its demands on the central role.

It's all Greek to them

Article Abstract:

John Buller's BAKXAI is sung by the English National Opera to the original Ancient Greek text of Euripedes' Bacchae. Greek drama interests Buller, who was inspired by the rhythms, sounds and meters of the tragedy, which was originally performed about 406 B.C. An English introductory prologue explains the plot and Jane Fisher prompts. She added a phonetic system to the script to help the singers. Some Greek sounds were unsingable so compromises were made but authenticity was important.
