Led by a crazed poker player

Article Abstract:

Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic is interested only in power. He is prepared to take significant risks, including bringing Russia into conflict with the West, in order to increase his own power. He has no interest in the fate of his people. Furthermore, the actions of his subordinates, their minds often clouded by the power he gives them, serve generally to obliterate any advantage he may have gained. He is irrational, and Serbia has no credible opposition to him. However, most educated Serbs believe that Kosovo will eventually gain independence.

Bully who pacified the Balkans

Article Abstract:

US envoy to Serbia Richard Holbrooke has gained a reputation for adopting a very tough line. This has won him the respect of Balkan leaders, particularly Serb President Slobodan Milosevic. Indeed, Holbrooke has proved to be the only diplomat who can match Milosevic in terms of stamina and determination. He is ambitious and has a very large ego, but this does not mean that he must be regarded cynically.
