Lessons of life in a tax haven

Article Abstract:

Barbados is seeking to encourage inward investment in financial services, thus ensuring that it does not rely too heavily on tourism as a source of income. It does not wish to be seen as a tax haven, and is therefore looking to follow the example of Ireland, which has developed an offshore financial services industry by offering tax breaks while the work is undertaken by people actually based in the country. This is particularly important for Barbados, where many people rely on the tourist industry, which is not likely to expand much further, for employment.

A culture shock Japan's banks will have to face

Article Abstract:

The current investigation into copper trading activities at Sumitomo will have a long-term impact on the structure of the Japanese financial system. It will serve to speed up the shift to a system based on market transactions, moving away from the present system based on personal relationships, which encourages people to ignore the market. The Japanese financial system is set to become much more transparent, with prices being set by the market.
