Life catches up with you

Article Abstract:

Playwright Simon Gray has been faced with a number of serious difficulties recently. His play 'Cell Mates' became a failure when actor Stephen Fry left the case unexpectedly, and he was mistakenly informed by doctors that he was suffering from terminal cancer. However, these experiences have actually served as an inspiration, and he remains defiant about his health and his work. It appears that facing the possibility of an early death has actually prompted him to become involved in a number of projects which he would not otherwise have contemplated.

Writer in exile, revolutionary in waiting

Article Abstract:

Nigerian author Wole Soyinka has constantly criticised the military regime in his native country, and has now seen his status reduced almost to that of a non-person. He now lives in exile, and has joined with some people who support his views to work on the overthrow of the present Nigerian government. His most recent project is 'The Beautification of Area Boy,' which will be staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and broadcast on Radio 3.

Charmer, charlatan, patron, genius

Article Abstract:

The Barbican Centre in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition dealing with the life of Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev. This is designed by Paul Dart, and has a clearly theatrical atmosphere. It includes a very unusual installation which links a series of Benois and Bakst stage designs. There are also a number of costumes, but they seem rather lifeless.
