Liggett to settle US tobacco lawsuits; maker of Chesterfield cigarettes to acknowledge smoking is addictive and can cause cancer

Article Abstract:

Liggett Group, which produces the Chesterfield brand of cigarettes, is likely to confirm shortly that it has negotiated a deal to settle lawsuits filed against the cigarette industry by 22 US states. The company would become immune in the future from such legal action, and would also make available industry documents to help the states in taking legal action against other cigarette companies. The deal is likely to bring in a new phase in the legal battle in the US over the responsibility which tobacco companies should bear for health problems in smokers.

Cloud over tobacco giants

Article Abstract:

US cigarette companies have had to face extensive negative publicity over recent years, being accused of manipulating nicotine levels to make people addicted to cigarettes and of deliberately targeting young people as potential smokers. They are also facing legal action which may end their record of never having paid any compensation to people whose health has been damaged by smoking. Manufacturers are now finding that the threat of successful litigation against them is pushing down their stock values.

US tobacco companies set for landmark $300bn settlement

Article Abstract:

Philip Morris and RJR Nabisco, the largest tobacco companies in the US, are seeking to obtain immunity from liability lawsuits in the future by making a settlement with existing plaintiffs. This could be worth as much as $300 billion, and would involve the creation of a smokers' compensation fund which the industry would fund over 25 years. It would also be necessary to accept plans by the US government to place cigarettes under the control of the Food and Drug Administration.
