Limited gains in two-pronged attack on drugs

Article Abstract:

The US Office of National Drug Control Policy headed by Bob Martinez set up by Pres George Bush in 1989 has been criticised for failing to reduce drug imports from Latin America sufficiently. The department's aim is to quash drug sources and supplies and reduce US demand through education and medical treatment. The first drugs summit with Latin America was at Cartegena in Feb 1990. Over $2.2 billion has been spent quashing the Bolivian, Colombian and Peruvian drug industries. Cocaine drug addicts has decreased by 35% since 1990 but heroin addiction has increased.

Leo Castelli was an art dealer who was born in Italy and who played an important role in contemporary art in New York from the early 1960s. He opened a gallery in Manhattan in 1971, but was better known as a dealer. Jasper Johns was one artist whose career he helped, as well as Andy Warhol, Robert Morris, Donald Judd and Bruce Nauman. His Pop Art stars became famous, but he was involved in promoting a wider range of work, investing in artists whom he saw as pioneers.
