Local hero

Article Abstract:

Michael Tilson Thomas, formerly the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, is attracting considerable attention in his new role as music director of the San Francisco Symphony. He takes great trouble to get to know his audiences and his players, and likes to capitalise on the personalities of his players. He listens carefully to what players have to say, and allows them to express their individuality, as long as this fits in with the overall structure of a performance. He has also encouraged Bay Area composers.
