Lord Howell

Article Abstract:

Politician Denis Howell grew up in difficult circumstances. He became active in local Labour politics and trade unionism during the second world war, and became MP for All Saints Division, Birmingham, England, in 1955. He was Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Dept of Education and Science between 1964 and 1969, and Minister of State at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government between 1969 and 1970. He became particularly well known for dealing with the severe drought in 1976.

Jimmy Dunnachie

Article Abstract:

Fitter, councillor and politician James Dunnachie became involved in trade union activity early in his working life. He was elected to Glasgow Corporation in 1972, and became chairman of the Clearance and Rehabilitation committee. He was later a member of the new Strathclyde Regional Council, and was Labour MP for Glasgow Pollok between 1987 and 1997. He served Scottish politics extremely loyally, and gained great respect for his hard work and concern for others.

Tom Torney

Article Abstract:

Trade unionist and politician Tom Torney joined the Labour Party at the age of 15. He became a full-time trade union organizer at the age of 30, and became Labour MP for Bradford, England, in 1969. He retained the seat until 1987, and during this time gained a strong interest in agriculture. He served on the Parliamentary Agriculture Select Committee from 1979 to 1987, and was also Chmn of the Parliamentary Labour party group on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
