Marketing to make computers friendly

Article Abstract:

Computer companies are taking radical new approaches to marketing as the home PC market in the UK expands rapidly. They are now keen to employ marketing specialists who are knowledgeable about consumers but do not necessarily know much about PCs. This has opened up new opportunities for graduates seeking a career in marketing. Computer companies are often quite small, even if they have a very well known brand name, and this means that graduates working in marketing see the results of their work more quickly than they would if they were working for a large company.

Is your system critical, peripheral or in the grey area?

Article Abstract:

Many UK companies are being forced to review their whole information technology (IT) strategy as they prepare to deal with the year 2000 computer date change. They must decide which systems are critical, and therefore have to be year 2000 compliant, which are peripheral and not really worth amending and which should be made year 2000 compliant if sufficient time and resources are available. It is sometimes more appropriate simply to replace a system than to try to make complicated changes.

Compaq buys its way to the top

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer will be able to enter the market above the desktop computer through its $9.6 billion purchase of Digital Equipment. It wishes to move away from simply being a manufacturer of PCs, and is seeking to convert itself into a computer company similar to IBM. Digital manufactures desktop computers and laptops, but it seems inevitable that some of its products will not be retained. Compaq may integrate some Digital computers into its own range.
