Markets all at sea over monetary union

Article Abstract:

The recent crisis on the world's currency market has revived speculation about the future of the single European currency. Some observers believe that the forced devaluations of the peseta and escudo have put an end to plans for a single currency, while others believe that the currency markets have in fact helped those who are trying to establish monetary union, paving the way for a rapid move to a currency union of the most closely connected economies in the European Union.

Power, intellect and the management of markets

Article Abstract:

US deputy treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is a key player in the formulation of world economic policy. He has great intellect, and has become extremely powerful. This has led to some observers accusing him of arrogance. He is now focusing on maintaining steady growth and low inflation and on ensuring that isolationist trends are not allowed to develop any further.
