Article Abstract:

An artificial neural network is capable of learning things in a similar way to the brain, according to Igor Aleksander, professor of engineering at Imperial College, London, England. This means that the programmer does not have to work out everything ahead of time. Computers which use neural networks have many of the characteristics which are conventionally associated with consciousness, and can be said to have a knowledge of self in that they can explore their virtual world and gain a sense of what can be done in that world.

He grew up in a modest background, and part of the resentment he attracts is associated with the feeling that he has moved out of his class.
