May the Force be with us, please?

Article Abstract:

Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Charles Pollard has shown a very open approach in allowing the BBC to make the documentary series 'The Force,' which was filmed over six months. The production team was permitted extensive access to operations, and individual offers were allowed to express their views openly. It is hoped that this open approach will be adopted in other police forces, especially the Metropolitan Police, as it seems that showing complete trust in police officers boosts their morale and makes ordinary people aware that the police have nothing to hide.

Private sector is the driving force now

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive economic liberalization in Cote d'Ivoire, the former French colony in West Africa, since President Henri Konan Bedie came to power in 1993. State-owned companies have been privatized, and free enterprise has been encouraged. The government now aims to reach a growth rate of 10% by 2000, with growth being mainly fuelled by the private sector. Cote d'Ivoire still has accumulated foreign debt of $16.8 billion, but it aims to finance the 1999 budget with the aid of foreign budget support.

A task force for enterprise

Article Abstract:

Botswana's eighth National Development Plan is mainly focusing on industrial diversification. At present, the country has only a small number of major manufacturing industries, and its economy relies heavily on diamonds and beef exports. Areas of potential growth include clothing and textiles. The government is keen to boost the fortunes of the country's around 55,000 small and medium-sized enterprises, most of which employ fewer than 30 people.
