Ministers to cut back on advisers

Article Abstract:

The number of political special advisers, who contribute to policy discussions with political presentations but have civil servant status, will be reduced under a memorandum from the Prime Minister to save about 100,000 pomds sterling a year. They comprise five experts and 21 political advisors, many in their twenties. The research department of the Conservative Central Office provides suitable candidates, who may go on to become parliamentary candidates. The work includes ghost-writing articles for ministers and talking to political journalists.

Arson fear after 65 die in disco fire

Article Abstract:

Police in Gothenburg, Sweden, have not ruled out the possibility that a deliberate arson attack caused the fire in which 65 teenagers attending a disco at an immigrant cultural centre in the city died. It is possible that the fire was started by an electrical fault in a spotlight, but investigators are suspicious about the speed with which the fire spread throughout the building. Overcrowding made it extremely difficult for the teenagers to escape from the building, especially as the only fire exit was blocked.
