Mo Mowlam's disarming ways may be just what is needed today

Article Abstract:

The decision by UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mo Mowlam to talk to loyalist prisoners in the Maze prison has been greeted with alarm by many people. It is clear that the traditional methods of seeking peace have not been successful, but there is still a reluctance to try a new approach. Mowlam is focusing on keeping lines of communication open, rather than on obtaining a peace settlement, and has shown great determination to go against the prevailing male-dominated political style in Northern Ireland.

Governing by focus groups is just playing at democracy

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common in the UK for focus groups to be used to try to find out what ordinary people really want. Most recently, MORI has set up focus groups to assess the public's views on how the monarchy should be reformed. The growing use of focus groups can be seen as a cause for concern. Focus groups generally ask people whether they feel that a particular thing is right or wrong, and rarely offer them an alternative or encourage them to devise their own alternative.

Masters and mistresses

Article Abstract:

There are considerable difficulties relating to ensuring equal opportunities in the world of art. The jury which awards the Turner Prize has recently been criticised for not including any women artists in its shortlist for the 1996 prize, but to include a token woman just to avoid criticism would also have been wrong. It is impossible for art to be moulded to the demands of political correctness, as this brings the danger of reducing all works of art to having a single meaning.
