Inside the Maze and out, ministers keep on searching for solutions

Article Abstract:

There is considerable tension in Northern Ireland following the assassination of Billy Wright, founder of the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF), in the Maze prison. The police and Army are making additional patrols in several areas, paying particular attention to locations which may be the target for LVF retaliation attacks. 'More revenge attacks are now imminent in the deadly cycle of tit-for-tat.' (tension between paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland)

Article Abstract:

There is renewed tension between paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland following the recent spate of murders there. The Ulster Defence Association (UDA), one of the two largest Protestant paramilitary groups, claims that it carried out the murder of Eddie Treanor, a Catholic. The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) responded by murdering Jim Guiney, a leading loyalist. There are now fears that the UDA may retaliate on a scale which cannot be ignored.
